During Global Money Week, the Cyprus Financial Literacy and Education Committee (CyFLEC) organized its first International Conference on Financial Literacy, titled “Financial Literacy for Youth: Preparing the Next Generation,” held under the auspices of the President of the Republic. The conference brought together national and international experts, policymakers, educators, and practitioners to explore strategies and policy frameworks for advancing financial literacy among young people.
A wide range of workshops and seminars were held throughout Global Money Week 2025, targeting different groups, including secondary school students, university students, journalists, stakeholders, and educators at both the secondary and tertiary levels. These sessions were organised as part of the official programme of the International Conference on Financial Literacy, coordinated by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) in collaboration with the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, the Ministry of Finance, the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), and the University of Cyprus (UCY).
Higher education institutions also contributed by organising university-level lectures and engaging in outreach activities. A lecture titled “Think Smart, Act Responsibly: The Key to Financial Well-being” was delivered by the Chair of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), while CyFLEC’s academic collaborators participated in media discussions as part of broader awareness-raising efforts. In parallel, the national competition for the International Economics Olympiad was organised by the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), with the support of the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC), CySEC, the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, and the Youth Board of Cyprus.
An extensive national awareness campaign was carried out by public- and private-sector stakeholders. Activities included social media campaigns, press releases, interviews, and articles aimed at promoting financial literacy, as well as television and radio appearances by academics, regulators, and professionals. CySEC also conducted an online campaign focusing on online scams, digital financial risks, and finfluencers, supported by its Financial Education Portal.
Educational materials were produced and widely disseminated during Global Money Week (GMW) 2025. A joint package developed by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC), the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth included a poster, an educational guide, and an informational leaflet providing practical tips on money management, protection against online scams, and finfluencers. These materials were distributed to all lower and upper secondary schools and technical schools across Cyprus. CySEC also published an educational guide titled “Digital Financial Environment: Opportunities, Tools and Risks,” launched an online quiz on “Protection Against Online Risks and Traps,” and provided specialised educational material on finfluencers. Additional financial literacy content was made available through the websites of participating organisations.
Numerous stakeholders engaged directly with students through school visits and on-site educational activities. The Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) hosted high school students for educational sessions and museum tours. The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) delivered presentations at lyceums, supporting the rollout of the new financial literacy module in lower secondary education. Lectures and workshops were also delivered by other stakeholders, including professional associations and financial institutions. In addition, lectures and webinars were organised in cooperation with external partners such as Junior Achievement Cyprus, PwC, CFA Society Cyprus, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC).
The Economics Inspectorate of the Ministry of Education coordinated a wide range of initiatives in secondary and technical schools throughout Global Money Week (GMW) 2025. Students were assigned short research projects on current economic issues, linking financial education to real-world developments in the Cypriot and global economies. Their findings were presented to their peers or published in school magazines. Creative projects were also encouraged, including designing posters, developing board or digital games, and producing short videos. Interdisciplinary projects were implemented through collaboration among teachers from various subject areas, including economics, technology, ICT, mathematics, languages, home economics, and art. Teachers incorporated current news articles and broadcast segments into economics lessons to encourage classroom discussion. Students also created thematic calendars and posters featuring impactful messages promoting financial literacy. Schools organised educational visits to financial institutions and museums, including the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) Monetary Museum and the Cyprus Stock Exchange.
