From Gross to Net Salary
From Gross to Net Salary
2 min read

Now that we understand the different ways we can earn income, let’s look at what happens when we are paid as employees.

We often hear the terms gross and net salary. The difference between the two can be confusing, especially when starting our first job. But one thing is important to remember: the amount we agree with our employer is not usually the amount that ends up in our bank account.

Understanding our payslip helps us see how our income is calculated, what deductions are made, and how to check that everything is correct.

1. What is gross and what is net salary?

Gross salary is the total amount of money we earn before any deductions are made.
Net salary is the amount we actually receive in our bank account after all deductions.

The difference between them does not mean that money is “lost.” These deductions help fund important public services and social benefits that we all use.

2. What is a payslip?

Every time we are paid, it is important to receive our payslip.

It is an essential document that shows:

  • our gross salary,
  • the deductions that were made,
  • our net salary,
  • any overtime or bonuses,
  • other benefits or deductions.

A payslip is not just proof of payment. It is also an important record of our income and may be needed for things like loan applications, benefits, or other official processes.

💡Useful tip
Keep your payslips together with your other important financial documents.

3. What are the main deductions?

In Cyprus, the most common deductions from our salary include:

Social Insurance contributions
These contributions help fund benefits such as:

  • pensions,
  • unemployment benefits,
  • sickness benefits,
  • other social benefits.

Part of the contribution is paid by us and part by our employer.

GESY contributions
These contributions fund the General Healthcare System, through which we have access to healthcare services.

Income tax
Depending on our income, income tax may also be deducted.
The way tax is calculated is more complex and will be explained in more detail in the next section on taxation and government support.

4. Why is it important to check our payslip?

Our payslip allows us to confirm that:

  • our salary has been calculated correctly,
  • the deductions are accurate,
  • any overtime or allowances have been properly included,
  • our personal details are correct.

Checking it regularly helps us spot and fix any mistakes early.

5. It’s not just about salary

When evaluating a job, we should not focus only on the net salary.

The overall value of a job may also include important benefits, such as:

  • private health insurance,
  • a provident fund or other pension schemes,
  • paid leave,
  • flexible working hours,
  • the option to work remotely,
  • allowances or support for education and training.

In some cases, two jobs with similar salaries can offer very different total benefits.

6. Common misconceptions

“The net salary is the only amount that matters.”
Gross salary is important because it is used to calculate contributions, benefits, and future pension rights.

“Deductions are money that is lost.”
Most deductions fund services and benefits that we may rely on at different stages of our lives.

“I don’t need to read my payslip.”
Reviewing our payslip is part of responsible financial management and helps us catch any errors early.

7. What We Should Remember
  • Gross salary is the amount before deductions.
  • Net salary is what we receive in our bank account.
  • A payslip shows how our salary is calculated.
  • Main deductions include Social Insurance, GESY, and income tax (where applicable).
  • It is important to check our payslip every month.
  • The value of a job depends not only on salary but also on the benefits it offers.

👉What’s next...

Our payslip shows what is deducted from our salary. But behind these deductions is a wider system that protects and supports us at different stages of life.

In the next article, we will explore employment benefits and Social Insurance and see why they are an important part of the overall value of our work and our long-term financial security.
